Urban development at the edges of cities and in rural areas is called “urban sprawl.” Because “sprawl” is not easily defined the Economic Research Service/USDA uses the more neutral terms “development” or “growth,” which don’t have implicit judgments about the quality or outcomes. The desire for personal space and individual home ownership has defined American ideals. With the easy accessibility of roads and highways, urban sprawl has extended the footprint of our cities. Each time we draw a new map and say, “We will go no further! This is the line we can’t cross!” just to see the edge blur and be erased by another housing project, a little further away, off the next highway exit. In this portfolio seven artists from all around the U.S. explore the fringe and how we continue redraw and alter the lines of our physical landscape through human action.
